Why Open Adoption Is Better

By Uchegbu Ikenna

Like I wrote in my article open and close adoption, I made you know that open Adoption is where potential adoptive parents know the birth mother and the birth mother goes through the adoption processes with the adoptive parent. Today am going to show you the advantages of this system of adoption to the birth parents, to the adopted and to the adopted family.

Advantages of Open Adoption to Adoptive Parents.

1. Courage: because of this relationships and communication between the birth mother and the adoptive parents, the adoptive parents have peace of mind because all the plans and desires of the birth mother are known.

2. A good understanding between the two families: Open adoption brings the opportunity of a good relationship to the birth mother and the adoptive parent and it may even extend to the extenden families of the adopted child and the family.

3. Full knowledge of the Childs health history: During adoption, the medical history of the child is provided before any other thing. This makes it possible for the open adoptive parents to verify more about the health history of the child, which helps to avoid difficult times that may come in future.

4. Confidence and understanding: Open adoption makes it very possible for the adoptive parent to know more about the child and this will help them answer any question the child may be asking in future about whom he is, and where he is coming from. . 5.Fully recognized: During the process, both parties becomes so intimate that even the birth mothers mind becomes made that these people are qualified to take care of the child. It therefore becomes a credit to the prospective adoptive parents that at least they are fully recognized and affirmed.

Advantages Open Adoption to the Adopted Child

Open adoption has different effect to different children; however I am going to list the effect it has on the adopted children.

1. No need to search for your birth parent: Because of the relationship between the adoptive couple and the birth parents during the adoption, the adopted child also has the opportunity to know who his/her parents are. So the problem of searching for them in future is solved.

2. Extra support from the birth family: Because the birth parent and the birth family have access to their child even after adoption, they may like to support the adoptive couple to see that their child is properly taken care of.

3. Courage: the adopted child still has a relationship with his birth family when it is open adoption. Because of this, they can always go to them for any question they want to ask about the family history and family trees.

4. Good understanding of the health history: before adoption, medical history of the child is provided, but because of the continuous link with birth parents, more of the medical information will be collect and that will help more especially when the child will grow also in future family planning.

5. Relationship with the birth family: it is always easy for the child to have a continuous relationship with his original family; some of the adopted children believe their birth parent to be just like their extended family.

6. They are protected against the feeling of being abandoned: Because the birth parent and the birth family also might have told the child the reasons for giving him up for adoption, the child becomes more relaxed to know that he is not abandoned.

Advantage of Open Adoption to the Birth Parents.

Open adoption has different effect to the birth parents on different people. This is the effect it has on birth parent.

1. Good understanding with the child: Because of how open this adoption is, it makes it easier for the birth parents to continue their relationship with their child, even after adoption.

2: Update with the adoptive parents: The birth mother has a continuous relationship with the adoptive parents. This makes them feel comfortable because they have the full update of the Childs well being.

3. Good understanding with the adoptive family: with this type of adoption, the birth mother knows more about the adoptive family and this gives them confidence of where their child is.

4. Control: Because the birth parent knows the adoptive parents, he has the ability to review, interview and even choose where the child will be placed.

5. Reduce uncertainties: Because the birth parents knows where their child is, they do not feel guilty for giving out their child up for adoption

Open adoption is very good. Because of the openness of the whole procedure a lot of people choose it. A lot of others repel it also because of one thing or the other. In my next article, you will see the disadvantages of the system to the adoptive parent he adoptive child and also to the birth parent.

Good luck and watch out for the next article.
