Local Adoptions - Somebody Close by Needs You

By Summer N Banks

In any given neighborhood there are children wishing for a home. In any given neighborhood there are couples wishing for children and a family. Why is it so hard to match up these groups of "wishers"? Although the attachment formed during pregnancy is not present in the case of adoption, the love most certainly is. Different factors come into play but the emotion is just as strong. Getting people past that concern is the first step. Getting them to adopt locally is a whole other challenge.

Foreign adoptions have always been a popular adoption option among folks "wanting to help". Foreign adoptions tend to be significantly more expensive and difficult to arrange than American adoptions and certainly more expensive than local adoptions. So why is foreign adoption so much more popular?

One reason is there the higher number of babies available for adoption outside of the United States. Couples have been trained to think they need a baby to fulfill their parenting experience. This continues to be a challenge to the local adoption cause, but because of awareness, more couples are considering adopting older children as a means to add to their brood when they have at least one other child.

Another strike against local adoptions is the fear surrounding the possibility of biological family members popping up and causing problems either intentionally or unintentionally. Of course this could happen but there are potential challenges in all situations. Delivery problems can occur but it doesn't prevent women from getting pregnant and creating another life. Why should a child who's already alive and in need be denied a home just because of potential problems?

Lastly, foreign adoption is cool and trendy. All the stars are doing it. Perhaps it is subconscious but people are swayed by celebrity activities. Maybe people just think it sounds more exotic to announce the adoption of an African baby than a child from the trailer park around the corner.

Local adoptions are easy and inexpensive through family agencies and foster care agencies. All court costs and other expenses are reimbursed. The government even pays a subsidy to new adoptive parents to help offset the costs of becoming parents over night. In some cases college is paid for, too. To answer the concern that the older the child is at higher risk of anger and mental issues, it is good to remember that many babies are born with defects and psychological concerns that can surface at any point in life.

Local adoption is not right for everyone, but it can be a perfect fit for many once objections are met and people and education is spread.
