Can you answer Nikki’s question about Adoption?:

I live in Pennsylvania and my husband and I are interested in becoming foster parents. I currently work a very demanding job therefore I would feel it most appropriate to leave my current job however I would need to make some of that income up. Does any on e know of any foster care agencies that pay a salary adn not just reimbursments for clothing, etc.? Any information would be great! Thanks in advance.

Adoption Feedback: Shame on you! This is what is wrong with the foster system. They let people like you take in children. You should not be using the kids to make up some of your salary! You should be ashamed of yourself. You are obvously in it for the wrong reason! You should not be given any children to watch. Go get a different job if you dont like the one you have.

Adoption Feedback: foster care doesn’ t pay a salary but you are given a monthly rate per child to help take care of that child—it wouldn’t be enough to supplement your income now trust me—but, that would not be a good reason for you to quit your job—foster care shouldn’t be about the money–if you can’t make it off your husband’s job then don’t do it..foster care is precious–you are taking care of children that have been abused, neglected , etc…it needs to be all about them and their welfare~~

Adoption Feedback: Foster care companies?? No such thing. They are called agencies and they don’t give paychecks. If you are thinking of fostering as a income possibility, better forget about it.

Adoption Feedback: You should be ashamed of yourself! You want to be PAID to tke a child in? You’ll get health care for the child as well and food stamps and WIC and a housing stipend. I would never expect to be paid to foster a child- what type of example is that? “I only took you in for the paycheck”. Unbelievable!!

Adoption Feedback: if you are looking to earn a salary then foster care is not for you. its about providing a stable loving home for children who have no one else. the fact you are asking this makes me think that prehaps fostercare is not for you

Adoption Feedback: Damn, people are so mean on hear. Shame on them! You can give a local agency and talk to them about it. They are pretty upfront with how much money will be given for the type of child you are looking to foster. It’s not nearly as much as a job though. I wouldn’t count on looking into fostering to replace the money lost in quitting your job.

Adoption Feedback: I work in foster care (not in your state), as a case worker.

Foster parents are not paid, they are reimbursed. Any money you receive is spent on the child. I know in my state, standard care is 14.24 a day. You also receive about 300 annually for clothing and another 50 for holidays. Extra money is paid out if the child needs extra care (medical issues or behavioral issues). There is also mileage paid for driving children. In some cases, you may qualify for WIC or food stamps. The children are covered under Medicaid.

Every foster parent I know that is doing a good job fostering spends more on the children than they are reimbursed. I don’t know anyone who makes money by fostering. If your income is extra money that your family does not need, then go ahead and leave your job. But understand that fostering is a labor of love, you should not receive any financial incentive beyond basic care for the child.
