“each woman would give birth to at least 5 children”, abortion and contraception prohibited. Ceausescu also refused to invest in vitamins, treatment, education for the children instead were given blood transfusions to children who had blood nutritional deficiency. artificial blood the same needles, the AIDS virus was a secret Romania was supposed to be perfect.

even working mothers and fathers did not want to raise retarded child because the perception of mental illness here was different from other countries. it was shameful to have an abnormal child. such children need special care and families could not provide it. adoption of such child was improbable , too , because of obvious reasons.

we have here a massive gypsy minority and they give birth to as many kids as they can. a lot of institutionalized children are from gypsy parents.

  11. balkanmix on August 16th, 2010 2:22 pm

abortion was prohibited 20 years ago ( im not saying that was good or bad). as a result many families were not able to raise their kids. people knew no contraception and many retarded children were born , from low iq parents. its happening today , too. so , “the parents” kept on breeding and thats too much for the budget.

i believe this is an old video. things are very different now , many orphans are placed into families where the mothers have a license of “maternal assistant”. others live in houses built for a small number of kids cared by maternal assistants , too.
the only sad places left ( but in much better conditions) are probably orphanages for disabled children (mentally ill). their condition makes them unwanted by their families .
ps: i guess the kids showed by the video were mentally ill , too.

this is not even sad this is terror

You have absolutely no idea what happened there. People were forced to breed by the communist government, making so much more babies than they could feed. That is why the orphanages were so full. Or do you think any parent would choose to put a child in these conditions?

  21. Csabika30NY on August 16th, 2010 7:55 pm

…this is sad, but what’s even more depressing is that the society fears these children, stereotyping that these kids are thieves, liars and vandals. Their parents didn’t want them, and neither the society. This is probably more depressing for these children knowing that noone wants them, and its not even their fault. They didn’t even had a shot in this life and they failed by simply being born…

  22. mc5444 on August 16th, 2010 8:16 pm

This is truly sad! Breaks my heart. I would so adopt a child from a any country if they didn’t make it impossible and so expensive.
