Many challenging circumstances led to the establishment of Love of Emmanuel Orphanage in Jakarta, Indonesia. Its founders, the late Reverend Backer and his wife, Veronica, began their ministry in 1993 when they were called to start a Christian church in the slums of Jakarta amid the largest Muslim population in the world. Interestingly, Veronica was born into a Muslim family and converted to Christianity as a child. The Backers believed that “in order to expect non-believers to take your hand in fellowship, you have to minister to their needs and reach their hearts through showing Christ’s love.” They began by addressing the abject poverty they encountered, feeding and ministering to the needy, and eventually attracting growing numbers to their following in a small house that became their church. In 1997, an infant boy was abandoned at their doorstep, which sparked the beginning of Love of Emmanuel Orphanage. As civil unrest unfolded on a nearby Indonesian island, 33 children were left homeless, and the Backers provided them refuge. Shortly after the orphanage was established, Reverend Backer died, and Veronica was left to carry out their compassionate work on her own. Since then, she has pastored the church and has led initiatives to expand the ministry to help many more children.
