Can you answer skatergurljubulee’s question about Adoption?:

Hi,
I want to verify some of what the adoption agencies I’m interested in have been saying. Does it cost money to search the online database? I am aware that some adoptive parents that sign onto an Agency have gag orders, but should that really stop them (Actually, I should make that another question entirely!)?
If any one knows the answer to this question, it would be greatly appreciated.

BBB is a waste of time, they had 3 complaints on an agency I unfortunately was screwed over by. Luckily I printed out the complaints as every 36 months the complaints are not available.
You are better off checking for free their 990 IRS forms @ http://www.guidestar.com
this is a real eye opener to discover that “non-profit” adoption agencies gross over $1million a year, it will also list the salary of the Executive Director -some exceed over $100K.
Joni Fixel law offices has a pre screen service. This is the office that prosecuted Waiting Angels and Project Oz Adoption agencies.

You can do some research at the Yahoo group for Adoption Agency Research–No adoption agency workers are allowed on this site.

Adoption Feedback: go to the bbb website. It’s free.. all you have to have is the exact name of the company

Adoption Feedback: Again, I’ve never heard of this gag order you speak of….and no, the BBB is supposed to be free…I don’t know about on-line, but I’ve used it over the phone and it as free.

Adoption Feedback: Even if there are many complaints against an agency the BBB may not have them listed. The BBB works like blackmail…..you pay them hush money and they do not forward bad information. This goes for any company not just adoption agencies. The BBB is a fraud!!!!
Contact the attorney generals office in the state the agency is located.

Adoption Feedback: You don’t say whether you are adopting domestically or internationally, but I have found the Adoption_Agency_Research yahoo group to be much more informative than BBB about people’s experiences with their international agencies. They are a very committed bunch of parents in this group, no agency reps or adoption social workers allowed, and they are mostly concerned with what is in the best interest of the CHILDREN, not just the anxiously awaiting PAPs. (and yes, unfortunately, some agencies do have “gag orders”, and you can get sued if you “violate” it. AAR has a list of agencies with such clauses.)

That’s great that you are doing your research; too few PAPs care to go through the trouble, because they (some, not all) want THEIR babies NOW! Then they find out later about irregularities or corruption surrounding their child’s true circumstances. Using a reputable agency can make a world of difference in your, and you child’s, peace of mind down the road.
