(PART 2/6) “CAREGIVERS’ ONE SPECIAL DAY” + HON.PC,MP. JASON KENNY’S SPEECH–MARCH 21, 2010

***GREETINGS FROM THE MINISTER OF CITIZENSHIP, IMMIGRATION AND MULTICULTURALISM*** I would like to acknowledge the many organizations, community leaders, and individuals that have worked together to ensure that the rights of live-in caregivers are better protected here in Canada. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued dedication towards building a strong, united and pluralistic Canada. Through the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP), caregivers are recruited to live and work in the homes of those they care for, in order to help provide child care or support for seniors or people with disabilities. As you know, on December 12, 2009, I announced proposed regulations designed to better protect the rights of live-in caregivers and to make it easier for them and their famiies to become permanent residents. A significant number of caregivers arrive in Canada from the Philippines and we appreciate the vast contributions of the Filipino-Canadian community in helping many live-in caregivers succeed here in Canada. As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I am keenly aware of the many contributions that live-in caregivers have made to many Canadian families and communities. They have enriched our society with skills, knowledge and talent, and, through their tirelessefforts, continue to foster the social, economic and political fabric of our country. Canadian diversity is a fundamental

We adopted a beautiful 9-month old baby girl from Ethiopia. We went through Le Toukoul Orphanage in Addis Ababa and Dove Adoptions International. This slideshow-video documents our journey to get Josanna (her birth name is Mihret). We stayed at the YGF private hotel (guest house), which we highly recommend. The whole trip was a great experience.

READ THE STORYLINE!!! Storyline: Jane is an orphan and she lives in an orphanage owned by a terrible woman who doesn’t like her. One night a vehicle pulls up and a young girl, Melody, arrives with a general from England where there is a war going on. Melody is roomed with Jane, and they click instantly when Jane invited Melody to sneak out with her to go swimming down by the beach. While swimming Melody comes across something shimmering in the water, a locket, and when they get back to the orphanage she opens it up and discovers Atlantic. The next day the two girls are at the beach spot again and Melody brings up the locket. Jane is tired of Melody always talking about running away and becoming a mermaid, and so agrees with her to shut her up. That night Melody tells Jane they should leave the orphanage and find the sea witch who could turn them into mermaids so they can be free. Jane is fed up with Melody and says no. Melody gets angry and asks why. Jane tells her there is no such thing, and they begin to fight. Melody however believes in it and runs away. She finds the sea witch who can turn her into a mermaid, but she has to sign a contract. She does, and magically transforms from human to mermaid. ENDING: Melody swims to the beach where she sees Jane and thinks about telling her about the sea witch, but she remembers the fight they had and decides Jane wouldn’t want to; she didn’t believe. Jane, however, sees Melody swim off and is sad that Melody wouldn’t say goodbye
