The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, has sparked a diplomatic row between Britain and Turkey with a documentary she filmed on state run orphanages in Turkey. The Turkish government is threatening the Duchess with legal action over the film which has just aired in Britain. The film is an expose of the conditions that disabled children are forced to endure in Turkish orphanages. But the Turkish Government has accused the Duchess of using the film to run a smear campaign against Turkey, just it is trying to join the European Union. In London, Stephanie Kennedy reports. STEPHANIE KENNEDY: Wearing a black wig and scarf, the undercover Duchess secretly filmed in some of Turkey’s orphanages for children with mental disabilities to see firsthand the conditions. (Extract from documentary) SARAH FERGUSON: But it is also the smell. It is that smell. It gets into your bones. REPORTER: Terribly overwhelming. SARAH FERGUSON: It was, wasn’t it? REPORTER: It really was overwhelming. SARAH FERGUSON: I think it was really important that we went into that place upstairs. It was just so degrading – the whole thing for these poor people. Having met a bright young autistic Turkish man and seen the physical and mental scars he has suffered from childhood abuse i shudder to think what the future holds for him.
As a foreigner my hands are tied.
I pray that Turkey will join the EU, so that conditions will become better for physically and mentally disabled people and if all else fails, Turks with disabilities will have a chance to move to places that does not hate them for being ‘different’.

Look at this logically, there are disabled people like this everywhere, even in UK. What you see here, dont be so confident that this doesnt happen in UK. Let me recall something, do you remember there was this program “undercover hospitals” (or smtnk) where nurses left patients in their beds soiled. More stuff happens. Its just how it is with the rich and poor gap attitute towards class consciousness. France doesnt want Turkey in EU, regardless that Turkey is more powerful than most EU members.

first of all its not the UE as you claim but the European Union (-: so get that right mr “nobrainer”. Secondly, turkey does not point the finger, we point the finger and get involved in matters that we should not be dealing with. Dont you think that england should commit more time to helping the people within its own country, than wasting money filming a documentary “illegally” i might add? You never see the turkish making a documentary on how corrupt the NHS is….?

In turkey they have a lot of disabled children, because they like to marry their cusins. There is a 5% higher chance of having disabled babies.

OK im english and of course i agree this is wrong….however maybe england should learn to deal with its own problems before they start attacking other countries! There are many problems in the health care system in england….many unfair things i have witnessed with my own eyes, especially the mistreatment off the old and very young….what about the recent case involving that young boy that was tortured to death?
